So once again I hit the pool for a couple hours on Saturday with my kids – it’s sort of our weekend tradition. And I have to tell you guys that it’s now 3 days later and I still feel fabulous!

My energy levels are through the roof, I got just the right amount of sun so my skin looks healthy and vibrant and the best part of all was we had a blast.

Now I’m thinking this Friday we might switch things up a bit for the 4th and spend a family fun in the sun day at the beach.

Its great exercise for the kids, Daddy gets to enjoy a few tasty frozen cocktails with his feet in the sand and we all get to bask in the amazing life-giving power of the sun.

Which actually brings me to the point of today’s health rant – too many Americans today are avoiding the sun due to a slew of recent press touting the dangers of sun exposure.

It’s just irresponsible reporting if you ask me. And today I’m going to show you why these guys have it all wrong.

Because despite what you might have heard, moderate daily sun exposure really is good for you.

Just the other day I happened across a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine that found that people with a vitamin D deficiency are nearly twice as likely to die as compared to test subjects whose blood contained optimum amount of the “sunshine vitamin”.

Vitamin D got that nickname because our bodies produce the “sunshine vitamin” when our skin is exposed to sunlight.

But thanks to an on-going campaign by irresponsible media outlets and a few major sunscreen manufactures most Americans either avoid the sun all together…

Or they cover themselves from head to toe in potentially dangerous chemicals more commonly known as sunscreen.

For me though sunlight is the only way to go – it’s a much faster, more visually appealing and cheaper than taking copious amounts of vitamin D supplements.

Not to mention spending a little time in the sun just plain feels good – and it’s one of the quickest most natural ways I can think of to recharge your batteries and improve your mood.

And if you have access to a pool or if you live near the beach – I don’t have to tell you that swimming is an amazing low impact exercise.

Lately I’ve even been thinking about buying an ocean kayak – every guy I’ve seen riding those things at the beach is in amazing shape. And it looks like a ton of fun!!

But what would the sunscreen manufacturers say…Forget them!

There’s just no denying the fact that moderate exposure to the sun is good for you. And if you sit back and think about it for a minute it actually makes perfect sense.

Our ancestors were born into the sun – and nature in turn designed our bodies accordingly.

So enjoy the sun! Don’t be afraid to take your shirt off while you’re firing up the old BBQ this holiday weekend – and instead of coating yourself with chemical based sunscreens when you’re at the pool or the beach try moderation instead.

You’ll be happier, healthier and you’ll look better to boot. And what better time of year to add a little color to that pale skin.
