Sleep Like a Baby Again…Tonight & Every Night

It’s one of those basic necessities of life that we simply can’t live without, just like good nutritious food, clean air and pure water. Yet so many folks in today’s fast paced world think they can get by on just the bare minimum.
Tell me, does this scenario sound familiar to you…you look up and the clock and you realize if you go to bed right now you’ll get a full 8 hours sleep and be raring to go in the morning.

But no sooner do you realize the time when all the sudden a really good movie comes on the T.V. So what do you do?

You end up hating yourself in the morning – as usual!

But what if I told you there was a whole lot more riding on you getting a full 8 hours sleep than just getting over that hazy feeling you have until you slug down your first cup of morning coffee?

Because according to a recent study conducted by Cornel psychology professor, James B. Mass, if you’re getting anything less than 8 full hours sleep every night, you’re operating functionally impaired.

Which means your productivity, your creativity and your health in general are all going to suffer!

Professor Mass also noted that “it’s between the seventh and eighth hour of sleep where we get almost a full hour of REM sleep, the time when the mind repairs itself, grows new connections and puts it all together.”

“ REM sleep occurs about every 90 minutes, and those periods of REM sleep get longer as the night progresses. So if you’re just a 6 hour sleeper, you’re missing out on that last important opportunity to repair, refresh and prepare for the coming day.”

Even missing just a few hours sleep can have a serious effect on your overall health. And if you’re like me and you’re looking for every possible angle you can find to extend your life past the century mark – you’re going to want to make sure you’re getting a full 8 hours EVERY single night if possible!

So skip the late night movies, because besides feeling great, just look at all the benefits a full night’s sleep has to offer:

Boosts Your Immune System: Researchers in Germany discovered that among a group of volunteers receiving the hepatitis vaccination, the ones that got a good night sleep directly afterwards showed a greater immune response to the vaccine – having nearly twice the antibodies as the sleep deprived group.

Real Beauty Sleep: When you’re in a deep relaxed sleep (REM) your body goes into repair mode and regenerates your skin, muscles and brain cells. No skin cream on the market today can do all that!

Food for Your Mind: A recent study conducted at the Harvard Medical School showed that people who slept immediately after learning or practicing a new skill remembered more about it the following day than the people who stayed up all night to learn the same thing.

Helps Make Friends: It’s hard to make friends when you’re short tempered and irritable. And that’s exactly what a lack of sleep will turn you into, cranky, aggressive and highly unsocial. In the most extreme cases, severe sleep deprivation can even cause hallucinations and/or paranoia.

So how much sleep do you need to function at full capacity and still be a joy to be around? Well, the experts recommend 8 hours, but I personally try to give my body exactly what it needs on that particular day.

Because some days are tougher than others – you don’t need as much sleep on a day spent lounging around the house as you would on a day spent working, running errands or working out at the gym.

So my advice is to plan your day to allow your body the maximum amount of time it needs to function at peak levels. That means going to bed early enough so your body has time to wake up naturally – without an alarm clock.

That’s the only way to be sure you’re giving your body the exact amount of rest it needs. And trust me, your body will thank you for it. There’s nothing like waking up in the morning raring to go – full of piss and vinegar.

But for an unfortunate few out there just falling asleep can be a real chore. I had a similar problem a few years back when I switched my schedule around and started working days.

My body had gotten so accustomed to being up all night it just wouldn’t let me fall asleep no mater what I did.

And you know me – prescriptions where out of the question. But over time I was able to come up with a few natural solutions to help get me off to sleep – and now that we know how critical a full nights sleep is I thought I’d share those with you today…

1) Find an all natural sleep remedy – there are a bunch on the market right now that offer all the same benefits as prescription sleep medications without any of the nasty side effects – most notably their addictive properties. The one I recommend is a product called SlumberSpray: You can follow this link to learn more – – SlumberSpray’s my personal favorite because the nutrients are delivered in a liquid mouth spray as opposed to a pill or capsule. So it goes to work immediately bypassing your digestive tract – just a quick spray before bed and you’ll be sleeping like a baby in no time!

2) Your body needs exercise – it’s impossible to get a good night sleep when you still have energy to burn. So instead of counting sheep try counting out 25 pushups – just don’t exercise too close to bed time because you don’t want to be all amped up and sweaty while you’re trying to fall asleep.

3) Listen to some relaxing music, the sounds of the ocean, or even monks chanting. Experiment a little and see what relaxes you the best.

4) No late night snacking – especially on sugary sweets or processed carbohydrates. Candy before bed has been a no-no since you were a kid – remember Mom always knows best.

5) Avoid caffeine and nicotine whenever possible – and especially before bed. Just like sugar and processed carbs, caffeine and nicotine are both stimulants. A “cup-a-joe” and a quick smoke before bed is a sure fire way to find yourself staring at the ceiling when you should be off in dream land.

6) Turn off all the sights and sounds – sounds simple enough but I can’t tell you how many people I know that go to bed with the T.V. on. You’ll be amazed how much easier it is to drift off in a pitch black room with no late night talk shows to disturb your slumber.

7) Keep your room cool and comfortable – the ideal sleeping temperature for most people is between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

8 ) Make a sleep schedule and stick with it – that means going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning. And I’d even recommend you keep it going on the weekends, at least until you have the problem under control.

9) Use your bed for sleep and sex only – get rid of the T.V. the telephone and any other distractions that might keep you awake. Train your body to recognize your bed as a sanctuary.

Remember, you’ve got a lot at stake here. A good night’s sleep is crucial – and just as important to your over all well being as what you eat and how much exercise you’re getting.

So try and make sure you’re getting at least 6-8 hours a night, so you can function at your absolute best – mentally, physically and spiritually.

Enough said – I need a nap!

Good News for Prostate Sufferers
–Doc Darville

And it’s even better news if you already like to drink green tea. Because researchers recently confirmed that drinking a couple cups of green tea every day can enhance your prostate’s ability to ward off cancer.

In the study, Italian researchers studied 62 men with pre-existing prostate conditions – conditions that typically resulted in cancer forming in about 30% of the cases.

Half the men in the group were given a placebo while the other half was given a green tea extract. And the results were very one sided…

Of the 30 men in the placebo group 9 ended up developing cancer — right in line with the average. But – of the men in the test group who received the green tea extract — only 1 out of 32 developed cancer.

That’s news we really need to be paying attention to because prostate problems are almost as certain as death and taxes if we live long enough. So anything that gives us leg up on this potentially lethal condition needs to be given serious attention.

But if you’re still in you’re 30’s or early 40’s and haven’t yet felt the pinch of a problematic prostate, don’t wait – it’s never too early to start bolstering your defenses.

You can buy either the green tea extract or the tea itself at most any health food store or whole foods market. And it’s not expensive at all — so give it a shot.
