That’s a simple explanation of “gene expression.” The first step in gene expression is called transcription. It’s the process of making a copy of a gene’s information. And you need vitamin A to get the job done.
When you don’t get enough vitamin A, your immune system gets weaker. Which means it’s easier for you to get sick. You may also have problems with night vision.
If you’re very short on vitamin A your body may have trouble making hemoglobin, which can lower your blood’s ability to carry oxygen to cells. Severe cases can lead to vision problems and even blindness.
Getting the right amount vitamin A presents a challenge. Vitamin A is fat soluble, so excess vitamin A builds up in your body – and make you sick. So you don’t want to get too much. But you also want to get enough.
