Look Good Today… and Pay for the Rest of Your Life

When I saw the news from the University of Miami, my jaw almost hit the floor. I had to look again.

Researchers there compared the numbers of several common businesses in Florida… and the #2 spot – was tanning salons.

There are 1,261 registered tanning salons in Florida… the Sunshine State.

It’s hard to believe, but Florida has almost twice as many tanning salons as locations of a popular drug store chain. Tanning salons even outnumber a very popular fast food  restaurant by nearly 50%!

If there’s one business we don’t need in Florida it’s a tanning salon. And it’s not just because we have plenty of sun. Indoor tanning can do serious damage to your skin.

The industry claims indoor tanning is safe… but I disagree. A recent survey that found more than halfof younger users suffered burning due to frequent indoor tanning.

Indoor tanning is linked to several other health risks. It accelerates skin aging and can damage your skin’s DNA. It can suppress your immune system and cause eye damage. And indoor tanning boosts your risk of the worst skin cancers by 75%.2

You may have also heard that indoor tanning is a good way to increase your vitamin D during the winter months.

Because tanning beds emit UVB radiation, they do trigger your skin to make vitamin D. But since the UV light from indoor tanning can be even more intense than the sun, I don’t think it’s a smart idea.

In the winter, my skin can make about 1,000 IU (International Units) of vitamin D in about 15 minutes.

But if I lived in Philadelphia, it would be almost impossible for my skin to make any vitamin D. That’s because the sun’s rays come through the atmosphere at such a steep angle, almost all the UVB rays are blocked.

So I recommend taking a nutritional supplement with vitamin D, at least during the winter months.

The government recently increased its guidelines for vitamin D. They say most adults should get 600 IU per day, and seniors should take 800 IU.

The Endocrine Society – the world’s leading association of hormone experts – suggests taking 1,500 – 5,000 IU per day. (Vitamin D is both a vitamin and a hormone, so it falls into their area of expertise.)

I recommend most adults take at least 1,000 IU of vitamin D3 (the type your body makes) every day. Some studies have found 800 IU is the minimum you need to trigger some of vitamin D’s important benefits.

What I don’t recommend is visiting a tanning salon. There’s simply no good reason to expose yourself to that kind of risk.
