How to Hit That 100 Year-Old Milestone

A few years ago, a doctor who claimed to be a specialist on aging, revealed his 3 simple secrets for people to live till 100.

What were they, you may ask?

Are you ready for this?

Oatmeal, apples, and naps.

That’s right… this doctor claimed that by eating a bowl of oatmeal every day, and apple every day, and by taking a short nap a day… that you could live to hit the century mark.

To say this statement was intriguing would be an understatement.

So today… I figured we could take a look at these 3 magic ideas and see if they hold any water.

And when I say the information might shock you… you can take my word for it.

So let’s take a look at these 3 secrets…

And because oatmeal starts many people’s mornings off… it’s only appropriate that we start with this traditional breakfast cereal.

Oatmeal… it’s not just for breakfast anymore

The first word that may come to mind when talking about oatmeal…

Most people know that one of fiber’s main jobs is to keep us regular… as it passes through the intestines… fiber acts like a scrubbing brush that can carry many of the access waste we have out of the body.

Waste that might otherwise stay right where it was is, rotting and fermenting inside of us.

But did you also know that high fiber oats may lower cholesterol as well as improve memory?

Just 1 cup of cooked oatmeal can give you 4 grams of total fiber… but half of that is soluble…

Soluble fiber binds with fatty acids… such as those fats that have been shown to raise your “bad” (LDL) cholesterol and lower the “good” (HDL)… and eliminate it from the body.

Bad cholesterol is also being fought on another front… as the oatmeal helps keep the your blood sugar levels stable… which can help reduce LDL levels as well as promote a healthy heart!

Oatmeal is also full of antioxidants that help clean out the free radicals in your body…
As well as having a wide spectrum of vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin E, magnesium, and vitamin B.

So far, oatmeal is pretty healthy… no matter what age you are.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away

Remember that little saying?

Well, there’s a reason that this rhyme came to be… apples are good for you…

Actually, they’re GREAT for you!

And here’s why…

Much like oatmeal… apples are a very fibrous food… containing about  4 grams of dietary fiber in just one medium-sized apple.

Which is about 15% of the Daily Value (DV) for fiber.

Included in this total amount is both insoluble fiber and soluble fiber.
And though we’ve already touched on the cholesterol lowering abilities of soluble fiber… some studies have shown that both types of fiber can help lower your LDL cholesterol levels and keep them under control.

The best part…

You really don’t need one apple a day…

If you eat just one medium-sized apple 3 days a week to get the amount of healthy fiber you need.

Also… just like oatmeal…apples are chock full of antioxidants.

Antioxidants are a key element to heart health, because they help protect our cardiovascular system from oxygen-related damage.

Apples contain a long list of phyto-nutrients that function as antioxidants and support our heart health such as:

  • catechin
  • phloridzin
  • chlorgenic

But to take full advantage of the antioxidants in apples… it’s important to include the skins as this is where many of these health promoting nutrients live.

A third reason to include apples in your diet is that they contain flavonoids.

Along with fiber and antioxidants these flavonoids implemental to your heart health.

Many flavonoids provide antioxidant protection; some help prevent excessive and unwanted inflammation; others help prevent too much clumping together of blood platelets; and still others help regulate blood pressure and overproduction of fat in your liver cells.

Flavonoids have repeatedly been shown to help lower the risk of heart problems before they start and help improve heart health even when an issue has already occurred.

Who knew this little fruit could be so helpful?

Catching 40 winks: How napping can help you

As we age… we begin to lose the ability to have a deep, recuperative sleep… due to our naturally changing sleep cycles.

This can be not only be irritating… but unhealthy as our bodies use sleep to recover and recharge.

Lack of sleep can affect not only your mood… but your immune system, cardiovascular system, and can cause you to age prematurely.

So, by napping, do you help your body recover missed sleep?

Contrary to popular belief… you can NEVER catch up on sleep… it’s just not possible.

But that doesn’t mean naps aren’t helpful…

Studies show that 20 minutes of sleep in the afternoon can recharge your mental energy… and the body seems to be designed for this afternoon cat nap… as most people’s bodies naturally become more tired in the afternoon, about 8 hours after we wake up.

But try to keep naps within the 15-30 minute time frame… as sleeping longer gets you into deeper stages of sleep, from which it’s more difficult to awaken.

Also, longer naps can make it more difficult to fall asleep at night.

But not everybody has time for a 15 minute nap… our lives are too busy to allow that much time “off”.

Well, no worries…even if  you only have 5 minutes to spare… just close your eyes as even a brief rest has the benefit of reducing stress and helping you relax a little, which can give you more energy to complete the tasks of your day.

So there you have it…

Can these 3 tips help you to live to be 100 years old?

I wish I could say it was definite… but unfortunately… there’s not enough data to back up the claim.

But that doesn’t take anything away from these three health improving ideas…

Try adding one or all three of these to daily routine… because if you do… you’ll be one step closer to a healthier new you!

Stay Healthy!
