Healthy Prostate 101

For me personally one of the best things that’s come out of all the research I’ve compiled over the years is that I have a true understanding just how important my prostate really is!
And armed with that knowledge, I’ve already started to bolster my prostate’s defenses – even though I haven’t had any problems as of yet (knock on wood).

One of the main reasons I take my prostate health so seriously is that nearly every man over the age of 50 suffers from at least some of the symptoms of BPH (an enlargement of the prostate).

BPH is a condition of aging, brought on by the continued growth of prostate tissue. It’s a problem that can be magnified by certain environmental factors, DHT (bad testosterone), poor diet, smoking, hormones and pesticides in the foods we eat — even a simple lack of sex can accelerate this already serious condition.

It has each and every one of us in its’ sights – and the symptoms are very un-pleasant:

Dribbling and a weak urine stream
Residual urine left in the bladder after urination
Pain pressure and burning during urination
A constant need to urinate, especially at night
And a reduction in your ability to achieve and maintain a quality erection

More serious conditions can lead to bladder infections or much, much worse.

You also should keep in mind your prostate is sort of like the command and control center for your entire penis. It controls everything from urine flow — to how much, if any, semen comes out when you climax.

You’ve tried Saw Palmetto, Pygeum Africanum, and all the rest – but they haven’t worked. They’re missing one crucial factor. Get it here:

So if you’re reading this right now and you’re over 45 it’s time you started taking prostate protection very seriously. And even if you’re still a young buck, it’s never too early to bolster your defenses.

And there are steps you can take to protect yourself. Mother Nature has provided us with a virtual cornucopia of beneficial herbs and nutraceuticals that have been clinically shown to support a healthy functioning prostate.

But I’m sure by now you’ve already heard all about Saw Palmetto, so today I thought I’d discuss a more obscure, but no less effective prostate protector: Lycopene, a super potent prostate defender and free radical fighter.

Lycopene: is a carotenoid found in tomatoes and tomato products. And it’s the most potent anti-oxidant of all the carotenoids (beta-carotene, alpha-carotene).

Anti-oxidants are those little miracles our bodies use to fight off free radicals and prevent cellular damage throughout our bodies – a process that’s thought to slow down the effects of the aging process.

Free radicals are essentially rogue molecules floating around in our bodies that attempt to seek out and destroy healthy cells through oxidization. And when these free radicals destroy enough healthy cells the organism (us) dies.

The effects of free radical damage come in many forms. Everything from skin wrinkles and liver spots to certain forms of disease – most researchers will actually agree that free radical damage is essentially the aging process as seen under a microscope.

And that’s where Lycopene come in – Lycopene is a carotenoid found in tomatoes that once absorbed by the body, works to prevent and repair cell damage caused by free radicals by actually blocking their growth factor receptor signals. A process that’s best described as turning off the light switch inside the rouge cells.

In a recent study conducted by the University of Utah’s Department of Physics, researchers noted that Lycopene might also play a protective role in your cardiovascular health as well. It’s been noted that men with higher concentration of Lycopene in their fat tissue have a lower risk of heart attacks than men with smaller concentrations.

Not only that, Lycopene is so easily absorbed by the prostate and testes it’s the perfect weapon for fighting off the effects of BPH.

So where can you find Lycopene? Well, you can get Lycopene from a number of sources, but as I noted earlier the most common source is tomatoes. But if you hate tomatoes like I do it’s not the end of the world – because research has shown that the Lycopene found in processed tomato products like ketchup and tomato sauce is much easier to absorb than in fresh tomatoes.

Fresh tomatoes are however an excellent source of fiber and protein — and are completely cholesterol free. I can’t however say the same for the processed varieties.

So if you’re not a tomato fan my best recommendation to you would be to find yourself a reliable prostate supplement like Maximum Potency Prosterin ( You’ll get your maximum recommended daily dosage of Lycopene plus a host of other proven prostate defenders like Saw Palmetto and Beta-Sitosterol — all in one convenient supplement.

Or you do what I do and grab a high-potency multi-vitamin formulated specifically for men like the one I use, Men’s Daily Formula (

One supplement gives me my complete daily vitamin and mineral support plus a few extras thrown in just for us guys… like Lycopene and Saw Palmetto for prostate support and Tribulus and Yohimbe for a little extra fire in the bedroom.

Now personally I’m not feeling the pinch of BPH just yet – but it’s never too soon to safe guard something as precious as your prostate. I know I’m not going to just sit back and wait for it to become a problem – and I hope you don’t either!

And get this…

According to new research one of America’s favorite pizza toppings — mushrooms are full of free radical fighting antioxidants as well.

According to a study from Penn State University mushrooms are the best source of ergothioneine (a powerful antioxidant) you can find anywhere.

And it’s even better news if you’re into cooking new and different foods. Because as it turns out — the more exotic mushrooms contain more ergothioneine than their standard counterparts…

Shiitake – about 13 milligrams per 3 oz. serving
Oyster – about 13 milligrams per 3 oz. serving
Portobellos – about 5 milligrams per 3 oz. serving
Cremini – about 5 milligrams per 3 oz. serving

Standard white mushrooms had the least but they still had more than wheat germ – and up until this breakthrough study wheat germ was thought to be the richest source for ergothioneine around.

And for my fellow cooking channel addicts out there… fear not – cooking the mushrooms doesn’t affect the ergothioneine content at all. So have fun and… Bon Appetite!
