Last month, Dr. Victor Marchione, sparked a conversation between us here on the importance of the Omega 3’s in our daily diet.
So it sparked me to ask you…
Have you had your omega-3 fatty acids today?
If not… you may be missing out on one of the healthy nutrients your body needs!
And here’s just a few things you should know about this healthy fat that may change the way you look at fat forever…
There are three major types of omega-3 fatty acids that are ingested in foods and used by our body’s: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
You’ve heard me say many times that if you can’t pronounce it don’t eat it… but today… I want you to ignore that rule here.
Research indicates that omega-3 fatty acids can reduce inflammation in muscles and joints as well as help prevent risk factors associated with chronic ailments.
Evidence is strong for the profound benefits Omega-3s have on heart health which particularly interests me… since I’ve had three heart attacks myself.
With my past history of health problems… I’m someone who has learned that omega-3 fatty acids are essential to good health.
But I’ve also learned that… since our bodies don’t make the Omega-3’s we need to be healthy… we have to get them from various food sources.
A Mediterranean-style diet which consists of eating foods high in olives, fish and nuts; and the diets of the Inuit Eskimos, who consume high amounts of fatty fish are both great examples of eating… when it comes to getting the proper Omega-3s you need.
With my history of heart attacks, blood clots and high blood pressure… I’ve learned the importance of eating correctly… and I’ve taken a few tips from these wise and ancient peoples.
I’ve found that sticking to a Mediterranean style of eating which is high in omega-3 fatty acids has become an essential part of living a healthy lifestyle.
Here is a list of foods and how much Omega-3 fatty acids they contain that you can buy at any local grocery store:
My eating lifestyle (I don’t use the word diet because it suggests a beginning and an end) includes many aspects of the Mediterranean… fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, extra virgin olive oil or grape seed oil and garlic.
I also use flax seed or chia (salba) seed and eat almonds, walnuts, and pistachios… all easy (and tasty) ways to get some important Omega-3s.
For optimum health, you should try to get at least 2-4 grams of Omega 3’s daily.
But with busy schedules, eating out, chasing after your grandkids… it may be hard to always make sure you are getting enough of these heart health heavyweights into your eating lifestyle.
That is why in addition to getting as much Omega-3’s as I can in my foods… I get an extra boost of these important nutrients in the form of a fish oil supplement.
It’s easy to take… and I know that I’m getting exactly what I need to know my ticker is working to the best of its ability.
So with that in mind… I wanted to issue you a challenge. If you’re not already taking an Omega-3 product… I want you to try one for 30 days. I’m willing to bet that you’ll notice the difference.
