Forget All About What You Shouldn’t Be Doing

Now don’t quote me on that one until I have a second to explain – I want you to understand where I’m going with this.

Here’s the set up – last night my kids came over for a surprise visit so I figured we’d all go out for a nice dinner together as a family.
And being that they’re all grown up now and this is no longer a dictatorship we put what restaurant we would eat at up to a vote – not that I really needed to.

Because right around the corner from my house we have what is quite possibly the best wood fired pizzeria in the world. And unless it’s a holiday or a special occasion we always seem to end up there one way or another.

Really, I can’t even describe how good their pizza is so I won’t even try – all I can say is once again it was unanimous! Yeah, I voted for pizza too.

So we get there – and of course everyone wants pizza including myself. So we end up ordering 3 of their specialty pizza’s (including my favorite BBQ Beef!) for a mid-size family of four.

Now I’m pretty sure I know what you’re thinking and by now you probably can’t contain it anymore…” I thought pizza wasn’t good for us Doc!” “I thought this was a health letter”!

The reason I know this is because my son Nick said the same exact thing when he heard me add the third pizza to our already over-sized order. “Geez, what would your readers think Dad?!”

So, what I’m about to tell you now is exactly what I told Nick last night over dinner…Don’t Focus so much on what you SHOULDN’T be doing or SHOULDN’T be eating – Instead focus on what you SHOULD!

I know it might not sound like much now – but it just might be the best advice I’ve ever given you. Just like I told Nick…

Sure we ate a bunch of pizza and even a few slices of garlic bread – and I’m sure we ended up exceeding our recommended allotment of calories for the day once desert arrived.

But the meal wasn’t a total bust – we all ate salads topped with carrots, red cabbage, tomatoes, radicchio, olives and cucumbers.

I ordered sides of Broccoli Raab (Italian Broccoli) cooked in fresh garlic and olive oil – and another one of my personal Italian favorites grilled baby zucchini flowers.

So at the end of it all we ate a pretty healthy meal – but the funny part was nobody noticed.

And the reason why is because nobody focused on the foods we should be eating like all those veggies.

I’d estimate we had about 4 serving each because of the oversized restaurant portions. But all they saw was the pizza – I know better though.

Instead of focusing on the negatives of eating pizza I turned my attention to the foods we should be eating – the salads, the veggies and all that other good stuff. And that made for one delicious and pretty nutritious family night out.

And that’s my advice for you today too. Stop focusing your attention on all the things you shouldn’t be doing like eating bread, sugar and having an occasional drink.

Instead turn you energy towards the things you should and need to be doing to stay young, healthy and vigorous – like exercising regularly, eating or juicing and least 6-8 serving of fresh fruits and veggies every day and having lots and lots of sex!

Sure pizza isn’t the healthiest food in the world but it’s not going to kill you – especially if you only eat it once in a while.

And the same is true about desert – you think I’m going to skip desert while everyone else is woofing down cannoli and triple layer chocolate cake? NO WAY!!

But what I am going to do is take my workout up an extra notch today and see if I can’t burn a few of those extra calories off before they permanently settle around my gut.

It’s true what they say that without your health you have nothing – but life is too damn short to eat like a rabbit and treat sugar like its arsenic.

There is a healthy balance to be found in life – and finding yours should be your top priority!
