Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite!

I rarely, if ever have anything positive to say about prescription medications. And today isn’t going to be any different.

I recently stumbled across an article about one of the new ultra popular prescription sleep aids. Unfortunately, they will have to remain nameless for now.
According to a recent article on, Dr. M. Mahowald and his fellow sleep researchers at the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorder Center have discovered that nocturnal eating may be a side effect of certain sleep medications.

Dr. Mahowald who’s the director of the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorder Center was quoted as saying – that he and his researcher have seen people eat things they would never eat while awake.

In the article he specifically mentions buttered cigarettes and raw bacon! And, he’s even seen people cut themselves on occasion trying to prepare food in the middle of their drug induced sleep.

But the funniest part of the article in my opinion was the researchers don’t recommend giving up your sleep medications. And they actually prescribe a second medication that kills the urge to eat while you’re asleep.

The side effects of that one? Who knows – it probably makes you fall asleep at the dinner table – or maybe it turns your hair red!! But don’t worry – I’m sure they can prescribe something for that too.

Personally, I recommend avoiding all sleep meds like the plague – they can be highly addictive and like I’ve proven time and time again, there’s always a simpler more natural solution.

If I can do it so can you…

About 7 years ago I made the switch from working the grave yard shift — to working a standard 9-5. And it completely threw off my entire sleep schedule for the better part of a year. I was tired during the day – couldn’t sleep a wink at night. It was a nightmare!

But I absolutely refused to use sleep meds – even the over the counter variety. My mom had always warned me off of these types of drugs because they’re so very addictive – so I steered clear.

And I’m glad I did — because at the end of the day all it took to get my internal clock back on track was a few simple lifestyle modifications – and I was sleeping like a baby before I knew it.

So if you’re like I was and you’re having problems getting to sleep at night. Or, if you fall asleep and constantly wake up throughout the night but you still refuse to medicate yourself into lala land – I have some very good news…

A full night’s sleep is in right around the corner. Just try a one or two of these simple tips for a full nights rest, and you’ll be sleeping like a rock in no time at all:

1) Your body needs exercise – it’s impossible to get a good night sleep when you still have energy to burn. So instead of counting sheep try counting out 25 pushups – just don’t exercise too close to bed time because it could make you too energized to sleep.

2) Listen to some relaxing music, the sounds of the ocean, or even monks chanting. Experiment a little and see what puts you to sleep the fastest.

3) No late night snacks – especially sugary sweets or processed carbohydrates. Candy before bed has been a no-no since you were a kid – remember Mom always knows best.

4) Avoid caffeine and nicotine as much as possible – just like sugar and processed carbs, both are stimulants. A “cup ajoe” and a quick smoke before bed is a sure fire way to find yourself staring at the ceiling when you should be off in dream land.

5) Turn off all the sights and sounds – sounds simple enough but I can’t tell you how many people I know that go to bed with the T.V. on. You’ll be amazed how easy it is to drift off in a pitch black room with no late night talk shows to disturb your slumber.

6) Keep your room cool and comfortable – the ideal sleeping temperature for most people is between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

7) Make a sleep schedule and stick with it – that means going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning. And that includes weekends, at least until you have the problem under control.

8) Use your bed for sleep and sex only – get rid of the T.V. the telephone and any other distractions that might keep you awake. Train your body to recognize your bed as a sanctuary.

Remember, a good night’s sleep is crucial to your health – and just as important to your over all well being as what you eat and how much exercise you’re getting.

So try and make sure you’re getting at least 6-8 hours a night, so you can function at your absolute best – mentally and physically.

Now you’ll have to excuse me – I need a nap!

Stay Healthy!
