Food poisoning is a lot more common than most people think. According to the Center for Disease Control approximately 76 million Americans are affected each year resulting in about 5,000 deaths annually.

If you’ve been following the news at all lately I’m sure you’ve hear about the recent scare involving produce being imported from Mexico being contaminated with the Salmonella bacteria.

There have been at least 922 reported cases of Salmonella food poisoning reported so far and I’m sure there will be plenty more to come.

The culprit: regular old vine ripened tomatoes.

And all this just two years after an E. Coli outbreak tied to tainted spinach killed three people in the US and sickened more than 200.

The Saga Continues:

The Fact is there are deadly foods being served on dinner tables all across America and most diners have absolutely no idea they’re even at risk.

And the real shocker is I’ll bet you’ve indulge in a least 1 or 2 of these potential health hazards over the course of the last next year. And there isn’t going to be a recall on any of these foods selections any time soon.

So last night I sat down and I compiled a quick list of the 10 deadliest foods that if you’re not careful could find their way onto your dinner table. Because really where would I be without my loyal readers…

10 Potentially Deadly Foods:

1. Holiday Turkey: When you cook turkey or chicken with stuffing inside it reduces the internal temperature of the bird which allows any present bacteria to survive the cooking process. I know it stomps all over tradition but your safest bet is to always cook your bird and the dressing separately.

2. Ground Beef: According to the Center for Disease Control your biggest threat of bacterial contamination comes from plain old ground beef. Now personally I love rare meat but when it comes to ground beef and hamburgers, well done is the only way to go.

3. Peanuts: Always check your peanuts very carefully for mold or signs of discoloration. Old peanuts can grow a certain kind of mold that releases toxins that are very harmful to our bodies.

4. Raw Shellfish: Avoid the raw bar at all costs. Shellfish like oysters and clams should ONLY be eaten after being thoroughly cooked – otherwise you could be setting yourself up for nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever or even the chills.

5. Sword and Shark: Both fish contain dangerously high levels of mercury which is dangerous in itself. But if you’re pregnant, nursing or have young children you should be especially cautious of this highly toxic metal.

6. Cookie Dough: I know it’s tempting to lick the beaters and the bowl clean while the wife’s busy baking cookies or that special someone’s birthday cake. But keep in mind that most batters contain raw eggs – and raw eggs can become contaminated with salmonella which can be potentially fatal.

7. Caesar Salad: Although it’s not as common as it used to be, there are still a number of high end restaurants that make their own Caesar Dressing at your table using raw eggs instead of a pasteurized egg product. So if you’re a fan of the Caesar it’s probably a good idea to ask your server what’s in their dressing.

8. Lettuce: Because it’s grown in such close proximity to the ground it regularly comes into contact with animal feces and sewage runoff – and that includes organically grown varieties. So make sure you wash your lettuce thoroughly and it’s also a good idea to remove some of the outer leaves and trash them.

9. Water: If your home is serviced by a private well I highly suggest getting your water quality tested at least once a year. Water contamination is so common even with city water that I had my own reverse osmosis filtration system installed in my home in 2006.

10. Sprouts: A staple of many raw greens drinks, vegetable juices and a popular salad bar topping. But unfortunately sprouts have been known to carry salmonella and E. coli. So I highly recommend cooking all your sprouts before you eat them.

To be honest in your daily travels you’re always at risk of coming into contact with one form of bacteria or another. But if you just take a second to make sure you’re making smart choices about what you eat and how you eat it – chances are you’ll be just fine.
