Boost Your Life By Catching Your “Zzzzz’s”!

Sleep…

It’s one of the basic necessities of life that we simply can’t live without… just like good nutritious food, fresh air and clean water.

Yet so many folks in today’s fast paced world… when it comes to sleep… many try to get by on just the bare minimum.

Let’s paint a picture…

You look up and the clock and you realize if you go to bed right now you’ll get a full 8 hours sleep and wake up refreshed and ready to go in the morning.

But as soon as you start envisioning everything you’ll do with all the energy you’ll have from a good night’s sleep… when you notice an very good movie is about to start on television.

 So what do you do?

If you’re like most people… you tell yourself that you can watch the movie and still get a good 7 hours of sleep.

7 hours? That’s acceptable…

But then you forgot to take the garbage out… or you left some clothes in the washing machine… but either way, you don’t end up going to bed until much later than you wanted to.

And the cycle continues…

But there may be more riding on you getting a full 8 hours sleep than just that extra cup of coffee you need to get over that hazy, groggy feeling.

Because according to a recent study conducted by Cornel psychology professor, James B. Mass, if you’re not getting the recommended 8 full hours of sleep every night… technically… you’re operating Functionally Impaired.

Which means your productivity, your creativity and your health can all suffer from the lack of rest!

Professor Mass also noted that…

“REM sleep occurs about every 90 minutes, and those periods of REM sleep get longer as the night progresses. So if you’re just a 6 hour sleeper, you’re missing out on that last important opportunity to repair, refresh and prepare for the coming day.”

He continues…

“It’s between the seventh and eighth hour of sleep where we get almost a full hour of REM sleep, the time when the mind repairs itself, grows new connections and puts it all together.”

If your brain is not being allowed to repair… you’re body responds to what the brain needs… and that could mean that even missing just a few hours sleep could have a serious effect on your overall health.

If you’re feeling run down and have low energy… your body can become more susceptible to different illnesses because they don’t have the energy to fight off those “nasty critters” that make you feel sick.

Not only that… but we’ve talked before about how important sleep is in your quest to hit the 100 year old mark… so if you want to join the ranks of the centenarians… you’re going to want to make sure you’re getting a full 8 hours EVERY single night whenever possible!

So forego those late night movies… because besides feeling great in the morning… there are a few more incredible benefits that a full night’s sleep has to offer:

Boosts Your Immune System: Researchers in Germany discovered that among a group of volunteers receiving the vaccinations… the ones that got a good night sleep directly afterwards showed a greater immune response to the vaccine… having nearly twice the antibodies as the sleep deprived group.

So give your body a chance to fight off the “silent invaders” that try to bring you down buy getting your zzzzzz’s!

Real Beauty Sleep: When you’re in a deep relaxed sleep (REM) your body goes into repair mode and regenerates your skin, muscles and brain cells.

There aren’t many skin creams on the market today that can do all that!

Food for Your Mind: A recent study conducted at the Harvard Medical School showed that people who slept immediately after learning or practicing a new skill… remembered more about it the following day than the people who stayed up all night to learn the same thing.

So much for those late night cram sessions in college, eh?

Helps Make Friends: Sleep can help you make friends? Well… sort of…it’s hard to make friends when you’re short tempered and irritable.

And a lack of sleep can take it’s toll on your ability to be the good-natured, friendly person you normally are. No sleep can turn you into a cranky, aggressive and mean unsociable person.

Even worse…in the most extreme cases… severe sleep deprivation can even cause hallucinations or other mental issues.

But the real question is…

How much sleep do you need to function at full capacity if you just can’t sleep a full 8 hours every night?

Well…while there this is still being debated… most experts recommend that you try to give your body exactly what it needs on that particular day.

Some days are tougher than others… you don’t need as much sleep on a day spent lounging around the house as you would on a day spent working, running errands or training at the gym.

So the best practice would be to plan your sleep schedule to fit you’re your daily schedule… allowing your body the maximum…or minimum amount of rest it needs to function at peak levels.

One time tested way to be sure you’re giving your body the exact amount of rest it needs…

Try going to bed early enough so your body has time to wake up naturally… without the need for an alarm clock.

I would suggest that if do try this… don’t start on a day you have to be somewhere early in the morning… try it on a weekend or a day off.

There’s nothing like waking up in the morning, raring to go, full of energy and vigor… and without the annoying electronic “beep, beep, beep” of the digital alarm.

Try it this weekend…

I guarantee that you’ll feel great… and your body will thank you for it!

As always…

Stay healthy!
