Overall, the researchers said, the probiotic led to improvements in both irritated and normal bowels.4

Because intense exercise is linked to leaky gut, doctors have looked at probiotics for athletes. One such article was published in the journal Acute Topics in Sport Nutrition.

The authors referenced studies showing probiotics can strengthen tight junctions. They also noted probiotics have a positive effect on athletes’ overall immune health.5

A study comparing athletes taking probiotics to those taking a placebo bears this out.

Doctors tested athletes in a 90-minute cycling trial and measured their level of gut leakage. Then they split the athletes into two similar groups. One group took a probiotic supplement for 2 weeks. The others took a placebo.

Next the doctors repeated the cycling trial… and again measured gut leakage. They discovered the probiotic group had much lower levels of a protein – Zonulin – linked to gut leakage. This suggests their tight junctions improved.

The probiotic group also had lower levels of free radical damage and less systemic irritation.6
